COVID-19 stories #2: “Us au pairs are strong and we are NOT alone”

NOT alone

During these scary COVID-19 times we have to stay strong, however difficult it may be. Some of us are dealing with homesickness, some feel scared and others try to make the best out of the situation. We are all dealing with this situation in a different way, but we want to let you know that you are NOT (!) alone. We will share COVID-19 stories from au pairs to show you that you are not the only one who is dealing with this.

Au pair from Austria

Hey fellow Au pairs,

I know it is a really hard time right now with everything going on because of the Corona Virus. But it is especially hard for us au pairs. We live thousands of miles away from our home country and our family and loved ones. We came here to the United States to experience a new culture, to conquer our fears, to grow as person and of course to travel and see as much as possible.

But now we are stuck in a house that is not really our own. We have to follow boundaries we do not always agree with. When we all first came here, a lot of us probably experienced a freedom they never had before. Now suddenly we have to stay inside and cannot go to public places or even meet our friends. And also our hostfamily needs us more than ever since all the schools are closing. So we do not have a lot of life left. Most of us had to cancel our travel plans and families and friends are unable to visit us due to all the travel restrictions. I know how much it sucks and how lonely you can get as an au pair especially right now. I have been here for six months now and my family was supposed to visit me but then the government shut down all flights from Europe. I was also supposed to go to Mexico but as everybody (including the government, experts, CulturalCare, host families and families at home) was strongly advising us not to travel at this time if not really necessary my friend and I decided to postpone.

So you see, you are not alone. Bad things happen but there is nothing we can do about it except following the rules about social distancing and to stay at home. So let‘s make the best out of this and try to stay positive. We are strong and we are NOT alone. Stay safe everyone!
